We are representatives from across the Australian political spectrum — right to left. We rarely agree on anything, with this exception: Julian Assange, an Australian citizen, must be freed to return home to Australian soil immediately.
We recently came to Washington to meet with Biden administration officials and U.S. lawmakers, to express the Australian Parliament’s frustration that Assange remains in his 14th year of arbitrary detention despite overwhelming support for his release from the Australian public, world leaders, United Nations representatives, European Human Rights commissioners and dozens of advocacy organizations. We were astonished to find similar frustration among U.S. lawmakers on both sides of the aisle.
