Medical Research Matters

The cochlear implant, the artificial heart, and the HPV vaccine are all groundbreaking lifesaving and life changing inventions born from medical research in Australia. Our researchers not only save lives—they drive economic growth and provide vital aid and innovation to our region.

We can’t call ourselves a “clever country” if we fail to value and support medicine and science properly.

Right now, the Government is starving medical research of full funding, even as it claims that science and research are national priorities. If our leaders truly value science as much as they say, then they must back their words with action—and fund it properly.

We’ve seen what happens when governments neglect science—like the Trump administration gutting medical research funding and dismantling the US Center for Disease Control. We can’t afford to let that happen in Australia.

If you care about something, you pay for it. That’s why I am calling on the Albanese Government to fully fund medical research in the next Federal Budget. You can help.

Today, you can help protect medical research in this country—and ensure it continues saving lives—by emailing Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Finance Minister Katy Gallagher, and Health Minister Mark Butler, to demand that the MRFF is disbursed in full, as was promised to Australians when it was established.

We can’t afford to wait. Many of our medical research institutes are operating at a loss; and some are forecast to close within five years. Medical research matters—and our government must fund it properly.
