Australia’s economy, climate and environment face big, complex challenges. We’re not tracking to hit our climate targets. At the same time, our Federal Budget is poorly structured to fund policy priorities, drive innovation and productivity, and deliver cost-of-living relief.

Melbourne-based think tank the Superpower Institute has produced two smart solutions to address these twin challenges: a Polluter Pays Levy to force fossil fuel companies to pay for the pollution they cause, and a Fair Share Levy on the cashflow of Australia’s big gas producers. Together, these levies could generate $35 billion in tax revenue every year and support the growth of clean industries, support tax reform, and properly fund other areas of the budget, like health and education.
