You may have heard that the Victorian Government has announced plans to rezone and redevelop the old VicRoads site in Denmark St, Kew.
The government should have discussed this proposal with the people of Kooyong before it made a big decision about us.
If you want your voice to be heard, please come to this community meeting on the future of the VicRoads site.
I’ll collate the feedback from the community, take it to the Victorian Government, and provide a platform for you to suggest any next steps you’d like me to take. We'll be joined by housing expert Professor Rory Hyde, an Associate Professor in Architecture at the University of Melbourne. I've invited the Premier and Victoria's Housing and Planning Ministers to join as well.
Earlier in the year, I wrote to the Victorian Government to make the point that if it was going to turn the site into housing, it should consider making sure a large portion of those apartments were affordable.
Last week’s proposal only requires 10 percent of the new homes be affordable, which I believe is an insult to those struggling through the housing and rental crisis. The site could have helped make housing more affordable for our community. Instead, without consulting us, the Victorian Government missed a golden opportunity.
Governments should be acting to ensure that nurses, teachers, and police officers can actually afford to live close to the communities that they serve.
Governments should be giving us hope again that our kids will be able to live near us. The Allan government has committed to building 800,000 homes over the next decade. But it's not talking to our community. Instead it's making decisions without transparency or local consultation. This is yet another state government infrastructure proposal without independent assessment or transparent costings..
I look forward to discussing the future of the VicRoads site with you.
