You have helped us put lobbying squarely on Parliament's agenda. Independents and their communities are cleaning up politics 💪
Breaking news: we’ve just won an inquiry into lobbying.
It’s a fantastic development that means our #CleanUpPoliticsAct is one step closer to becoming a reality.
Since I introduced the #CleanUpPoliticsAct into Parliament three weeks ago, I’ve been working with other politicians to see how we can grow momentum for the idea.
Independent Senator David Pocock is one such politician: thanks to his good work, a Senate committee will now hold hearings and prepare a detailed report about lobbying.
It’s wonderful news. This has only happened because you helped to kickstart what has quickly becoming a nationwide campaign to clean up politics by shining a light on lobbying.
Your support has made it impossible for the government to ignore this issue - and it’s just the beginning.
This inquiry is the perfect platform for the next stage of this campaign. It will help make the #CleanUpPoliticsAct a nationally recognisable political issue ahead of the next election.
To do that, we need your support to run advertising that raises the profile of the issue so much that it becomes impossible for media and other politicians to ignore.
This inquiry shows us that pressure works. For the first time in years there will be a serious conversation about lobbying in Parliament.
That’s vital because every day lobbyists are influencing politicians so decisions are made in vested interests, not the public interest.
It’s vital because there are 15 lobbyists for every politician in Parliament — lobbyists who are often former politicians themselves, and who walk around Parliament freely.
It’s vital because lobbyists for the fossil fuel companies, the big supermarkets, gambling, Qantas… you name it… are too often unregulated and unrestrained.
It’s time to shine a light on lobbying.
